Our June opening 2009:
Each poem is to illumine the nature of the painting and the painting was intended to do the same for the poem. They were never meant as illustrations.
The paintings are abstract visual images and symbols, the poems also are filled with visual images. Together, each are to encourage the viewer to explore their own experiences and maybe find themselves in both works, eventually finding that Grace has always been with them.
I long to descend the bowels of union --
I long to be swallowed, alive and whole:
To find myself mergered in love's sweet consumption,
but people just sip me,
like soup from a bowl.

Ashes to ashes, burned to dust --
what shall become of me?
Die to myself, and die I must
if ever I'd be free.
Free to determine whom Ill serve
and who I'd deign to be --
Ashes, ashes, burned to dust,
And raised like a phoenix --
Me

I sounded the depths
but bottomless
bottomless
bottomless
was the infinite sea.
I sounded the heights
but measureless
measureless
was the infinity over me.
I reached for His hand
and though power unbearable
grasped my frail arm
I felt no pain.
He'd turned His head 'lest the blast of
His brightness
consume my faltering human frame. Kathleen A. Seiler
